To define your own leadership role like a captain on your ship is one of the most difficult lesson to learn. You haven’t been born or named from somebody to a leader. The function of leading an organization has been given to you only. What you make out of it, depends on your own multiple intelligences (see Howard Gardner), your own socialization, your own ability to reflect, your own willingness to develop yourself and how you handle with the specific expectations of your own staff and environment.
To specify your own leadership role means further to live leadership and to recognize yourself – every day a little bit more. What kind of leadership style fits to you mostly is a matter of all your everydays decisions in big and small projects.
Nevertheless there will be situations in which you will recognize, that you hava left your style and role, mostly in situations of emotional conflicts. In those situations you will maybe see yourself in totally different style, and maybe you won’t like to see this.
As I started in my leadership function I had known one thing: I do not want to go in the autocratic style from my predecessor. That’s not my way. But now I encountered, sometimes you need to decide in autocratic style too.
Mostly I want to see myself in supporting my staff, making ideas possible and bring reasonable and polite culture in my organization. As a result of the change in leadership, there was a huge power vacuum in my organization. So I have tried to fill the power vaccum smartly with certain persons. Persons with high responsibility for the whole organization. Persons, who are brave and innovative. This group of persons now have grown to my development team in leadership and supports me in many issues.
